Mariam Guniava
Mariam Guniava
Imereti, Western Georgia
The Guniava family has a family winemaking history that dates back over 200 years so it was no real surprise when, in 2019, youngest generation Mariam continued the family legacy by founding her own eponymous label. Moving from the family home and establishing her own vineyard and marani, Mariam makes two wines at the moment and is forging her own path while still drawing on the wealth of knowledge gained from her father, Archil.
The 1ha vineyard is located in a small village called Simoneti which is in Imereti in Western Georgia. It is 250m above sea level and was planted in 2017 to Tsolikouri, Krakhuna, Tsitska & Aladasturi. The soil is sandy clay with flint. The marani is located on the ground floor of Mariam’s home in the centre of Kutaisi. There are a total of 8 kvevris that range in size from 100L to 1000L. The kvevris are half buried and have a stable temperature all year round.
